What Makes Us Different

A team that makes all things possible

Our Frontline Team

The Rise to Life’s frontline team are the heart of our agency working tirelessly everyday to provide compassionate and empathetic care to the individuals we support. They come from different backgrounds, speak different languages, and are educated in a variety of disciplines relevant to the services we provide.

Our frontline team is experienced working with high risk individuals, individuals with various intellectual and developmental disabilities, individuals who are both verbal and nonverbal, and individuals who require varying levels of support with personal care.

Program Manager

Our Program Manager has over 20 years experience working in the social services field. Having worked with children, youth, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, extreme high risk behaviours, as well as individuals with FASD, ASD, ADHD, and ODD.

All programs and services provided to the individuals we serve are tailer made to suit their needs while taking into consideration their skills and abilities, and most importantly, what they want for themselves and their life. The Program Manager will meet with the individuals and, when possible, their entire circle of care to come up with a Plan of Care, including goals, that are appropriate and attainable for each individual.

Quality Control Program

Providing a high quality service means having a quality control program where staff are observed regularly and randomly checked in on to ensure they are meeting or exceeding Rise to Life’s standard of care. Our programs are designed to prevent neglect and to promote and empower individuals in all aspects of their lives.

Our management team meets frequently with the individuals we support, their families, guardians, others within their circle of care, and stakeholders to address concerns and resolve any challenges that might come up to decrease the likelihood of escalation. We welcome all feedback, both positive and constructive, from everyone involved in the individuals circle of care.

Work Related Childcare

Like school, out of school care can be challenging for some children and youth because they feel, think, act, or behave differently from their peers. Rise to Life offers childcare before and after school or other programming, for parents that work inside or outside of the home. The childcare can take place outside of the child’s home in a sensory friendly environment with smaller group sizes, or inside the child’s home. No matter where the childcare takes place, the activities are tailored to what you child needs during this time, whether it’s rest and relaxation, brain activities, body activities, or a combination of both.

Short Term Respite Care

It is normal to feel overwhelmed, tired, or even burnt out when providing round the clock care to a loved one. Our caregivers can help by providing short term, nonmedical relief for primary caregivers that is planned or on an emergency basis, giving you time to rest, time for self care, to run errands, travel, or spend time with friends or other family members. This care can be provided in blocks of 1 hour in your home, in a Rise to Life residential home, or in the community doing activities such as swimming or going to the park.

24 Hour Respite Care

Sometimes a break of a couple of hours isn’t enough to get the proper rest or to complete necessary tasks and primary caregivers need more time and longer respite services. In these cases, Rise to Life offers 24-hour respite care in our residential home which includes meals and snacks, help with hygiene routines such as showering and teeth brushing, and of course includes lots of fun! Advanced notice of at least 48 hours is required to ensure we have the space to accommodate your loved one.

Educational Supports

School can be challenging at times for all students, but it can be extra challenging for children with ASD, FASD, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. These challenges include things like sensory challenges, emotional regulation, executive functioning, impulse control, and social skills. Rise to Life is a registered vendor with the Edmonton Public School Board which allows us to provide educational supports for your child outside of your home in our residential home or in the community. Gym class becomes more fun when you get out of the stuffy school gymnasium and instead go to the local recreation center to go swimming or play sports. In Home Education supports must be requested by your child’s school so if you are interested in learning more about this service and how your child could qualify, please speak to your child’s school.

Daily Living Skills

As parents, we all want to teach our children and youth important skills such as preparing their own meals or snacks, doing house cleaning, making their bed, or doing laundry but we don’t always have the necessary time or patience to do so. Rise to Life’s staff can help teach all of these skills and more in our residential facility while they are there for respite care or work-related childcare. Lessons will be tailor made for each child or youth based on their skills and abilities while also taking into consideration things they like and don’t like to do, with input from their parents of course!

Behavioural Supports

Rise to Life has dedicated and experienced staff that can help parents who are struggling due to their child’s negative or unwanted behaviours. A staff member will meet with the parents to get an understanding of what the behaviour of concern is and any other relevant information such as when and why they believe it’s happening. Staff will then spend time with the child in different environments doing a variety of activities while documenting everything that occurs. The observations and findings will then be combined into a report that will provide more insight into the behaviour and outline strategies that parents, teachers, and other supports can use to replace the behaviour with something more positive or eliminate the behaviour all together. Depending on the needs of the parents and the level of funding available, Rise to Life staff can continue to work with the parents after the report is completed to assist them in implementing and following through with the strategies that were outlined.

Basic Learner Skills

Before children can learn new skills, they must first “learn to learn.” While most children naturally develop these skills through play and social interactions, autistic toddlers often need more structured and specific activities to develop basic learner skills. It is crucial for children to attend school with their peers to learn from their interactions and play. However, some children may face challenges in participating in academic and social activities cohesively. Rise to Life will work with your child to teach him basic learner skills such as visual performance, motor imitation, action labeling, play and leisure skills and social interaction skills to help him succeed in school.
